Brazil nuts come from Bertholletia excelsa, one of the tallest and longest-lived trees in the Amazon Rainforest, reaching up to 50 meters in height and living for over 500 years. It is native to virgin forest regions in South America.
Production is almost entirely extractive. This means it depends on the preserved forest to exist, since the tree's pollination is done by specific bees that only live in balanced ecosystems.
Interesting facts:
• The "Coconut":Brazil nuts don't grow loose. They are inside a "coconut," an extremely hard woody capsule weighing about 2 kg. To open it in the forest, you need a machete or the jaw strength of an agouti (the only animal capable of naturally gnawing the “coconut”).
• Superfood:It is the world's largest natural source of selenium. Just one or two nuts a day meet the daily requirement of this essential mineral for the immune system and thyroid.
The macadamia nut is often called "queen of nuts“, and it's no coincidence. With its buttery texture and delicate flavor, it's considered by many to be the "most delicious" nut.
It originates from the tropical forests of Eastern Australia (Queensland and New South Wales). Local native peoples have been consuming this nut for millennia. It was only in the 19th century that European botanists "discovered" it and named it after the scientist John Macadam. It wasn't until the late 1800s that commercial production truly gained global scale.
Interesting facts:
• The Hardest Shell in the World: The macadamia shell is incredibly resistant. To crack it without crushing the nut, a pressure of about 300 pounds per square inch (psi) is required.
• White Gold: Due to the long time the tree takes to produce (7 to 10 years) and the complexity of harvesting, it is considered one of the most prized and expensive nuts on the market.
• Pure Health: It is very rich in monounsaturated fats (the "good fats"), which help with heart health, and is also an excellent source of flavonoids, which fight cellular aging.
Baru nuts are the jewel of the Brazilian Cerrado. While Brazil nuts come from the Amazon rainforest, Baru is the legitimate representative of the heart of Brazil, gaining increasing prominence in functional gastronomy.
Baru (Dipteryx alata) is the fruit of the Baru tree, a majestic tree native to the vast Cerrado biome, especially in the Brazilian states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Minas Gerais. It is the Treasure of the Brazilian Cerrado.
Its harvest is a perfect example of sustainability: the fruits fall to the ground when ripe and are collected by local communities, helping to preserve the biome and generating income for extractive families.
Interesting facts:
• AphrodisiacDue to its high zinc content and energizing properties, the baru nut has gained popular fame as a potent aphrodisiac.
• High in Protein: It has a higher protein content than all other nuts, reaching approximately 26% of its composition, making it highly sought after by athletes and vegetarians.
• Amazing Flavor: The flavor of roasted baru nuts is a fascinating blend that mixes notes of peanut and chocolate, combining perfect crunchiness with one of the highest protein and zinc contents in the plant kingdom.
